As part of our ongoing Dublin Photo Diary series, we showcase the best Dublin-based photographers. This week, we feature the work of Aidan Kelly.
Meet photographer Aidan Kelly
Aidan Kelly has certainly built himself a formidable reputation in the photography industry. He’s worked with clients like Gemma Hayes, Rubyworks Records, Brown Thomas, Jameson, U2, Sony, Rodrigo y Gabriella, the Arts Council, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Channel 4 and Oscar-winning Fantastic Films – to name just a few.
Taking inspiration from the city
According to Aidan, Dublin has been a constant source of inspiration for his photographic works.
“Even when I travel to take pictures or try to branch out with new ideas, I always compare them to the work done here,” he says. “This place is where my work is.”
Aidan’s work has taken him far and wide – from Japan to the UK. However, when he comes back to Dublin, the city still proves to be his muse.
“There is a feeling that’s abstract about my hometown,” he explains. “She’s a distant lover, a woman I have a love/hate relationship with. Trying to overcome this feeling is the energy that fuels the work I try to do. She’s a hero I’m trying to impress.”
Little White Lies
Years ago, when Aidan Kelly returned to Dublin and began to reacquaint himself with life in the city, he began to record his day-to-day experiences.
Later on, this work ultimately inspired his contribution to a project that he worked on with street artist DMC – aka Dermot McConaghy. It was entitled ‘Little White Lies’ and included a series of unique artworks that combine photography, stencils and spray paint. Here, you can view a short documentary video about it.
