Joe O’Callaghan Quartet

This event has ended

Sin É, Thursday 17th February

Joe O’Callaghan is a genuine force in Irish jazz guitar, his playing characterised by extended tasteful lines, contemporary chord shapes and an instinct for rocking out when the need arises. A leading figure in the scene, Joe has performed with Irish and international jazz musicians including Ronan Guilfoyle, Louis Stewart, Richie Buckley, Michael Buckley, Honor Heffernans, Dave Liebman, Tom Rainey, & Nils Wogram.

In trio Sankhara, Joe has received critical acclaim for powerful music created together with the classical and contemporary influences of pianist Izumi Kimura and the experimental agility of bassist Derek Whyte. Joe’s leadership was praised by the Irish Times “Despite an impressive command of his own instrument, the unassuming guitarist gives plenty of space to his equally impressive bandmates, pianist Izumi Kimura and bassist Derek Whyte, to put their own mark on the music.”

As a quartet, they are joined by Limerick drummer John Daly, noted for his supportive and groove-driven playing. Together they form an extraordinarily instinctive and communicative musical supergroup. The quartet can be anything from lyrical to avant-garde to straight-ahead swing and everything in between – never predictable, always exciting.
