National Print Museum, Thursday 17th August
We live in a world surrounded by the printed word – have you ever wondered how your newspaper
was made or who created the labels and posters you come across every day?
Join us at the National Print Museum for this Demonstration & Reminiscence event and meet the printers and compositors who dedicated their lives printing.
Hear their fabulous stories, from apprenticeships in the 1960s to the decline of letterpress in the 1980s, as they demonstrate the printing presses and casting machines of our working collection. Experience the heritage of letterpress printing come alive in the hands of these skilled crafts persons.
The event celebrates the recent publication ‘Strange Types and Odd Sorts, A Peek into the World of Print in Ireland' – a collaboration between the Museum and Fighting Words. The book documents memories of lives lived in apprenticeships, jobbing houses, newspapers, binderies and now an utterly transformed world of printing. On the day, you will have the opportunity to hear some choice stories from the volume.
