Mondays at the Mess: Weaving in the Liberties with Cathy Scuffil

This event has ended

Online, Monday 19th July

Mondays at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks, Inchicore that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present.

Place Names such as Weaver’s Square, Newmarket, Cross-Stick Alley, and The Tenters to name but a few, all hint at the once great weaving tradition that did so much to shape The Liberties of Dublin.

The weaving story wasn’t always smooth and even, it was affected by external decisions such as the imposition of tariffs on Irish exports by Britain and the Act of Union in 1801 and today has all but died out.

This talk, led by Cathy Scuffil, Dublin City Council Historian In Residence for Dublin South Central and South East areas highlights the evidence of this booming industry in The Liberties that stretches back to Viking times and looks at how it may now be a key feature in the ongoing regeneration of this area.

Catherine (Cathy) Scuffil (MA, BBS Hons) is Dublin City Council Historian In Residence for Dublin South Central and South East areas. Dublin born and reared, Cathy’s interest in local history was formed at an early age encouraged by parents who also shared a love of Dublin. Her master’s thesis research was published by Four Courts Press as The South Circular Road Dublin on the Eve of the First World War and an abridged version awarded the silver medal by the Old Dublin Society (2018). Cathy was actively involved in a wide range of community events during the 1916 Rising centenary commemorations, and is a consultant historian as well as working as one of Dublin City Council’s five Historians in Residence.

The free Talk will take place online using Zoom, a free online meeting platform. You will need an internet connection and a compatible device (e.g. computer, laptop, iPad, tablet, phone) to access Zoom.

Please note, the Zoom link to the Talk is contained in your reminder email sent 24 hours prior to the event.
