Hidden Histories of the Irish Abroad: Irish, Jewish & Irish Jewish History

This event has ended

Online, Thursday 18th February

This talk explores Irish-Jewish experiences alongside encounters between the Irish and Jewish diasporas. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, Irish and Jewish emigrants often found themselves living side by side in the tenement housing of the migrant working class, particularly in the East End of London and New York’s East Side.

From the story of how Oscar Wilde’s Yiddish translator took up arms against Ukrainian Cossacks to challenging histories of Irish diasporic antisemitism, this talk will illuminate one of the most dynamic avenues for research in the broader story of the Irish abroad.

To help us explore these two diasporas and their points of encounter, our DFA Historian in Residence Dr Maurice Casey will be joined by Professor Hasia Diner, the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University.

A donation of €5 to MASI per lecture would be welcomed.
