Always Brighter Stories celebrates people doing kind, inclusive work in their communities across Dublin. From volunteer groups to disability activists, social enterprises, charities and more, we’re spotlighting these stories to thank all Dubliners who positively impact our city and county.
Bull Island Action Group are a collective of volunteers who organise monthly beach clean-ups on Dollymount strand. For over 20 years, the group has been meeting on the third Saturday of every month year-round, no matter the weather. They clean the beach, sand dunes, and surrounding areas via litter pickup and contribute to the conservation of the Bull Island biosphere.
In 1981, UNESCO recognised the importance of Dublin Bay by designating North Bull Island as a Biosphere because of its rare and internationally important habitats and wildlife species. To support sustainable development, UNESCO’s concept of a Biosphere has evolved to include not just areas of ecological value but also the areas around them and the communities that live and work within these areas. Additional international and national designations covering much of Dublin Bay have since been added to protect its water quality and biodiversity.
To fulfil these broader management aims for the ecosystem, the Biosphere was expanded in 2015. The Biosphere now covers Dublin Bay, reflecting its significant environmental, economic, cultural and tourism importance, and extends to over 300km². Over 300,000 people live within the newly enlarged Biosphere.
