Talks at the Mess:WT Cosgrave-Architect of the Hard Land Border?

This event has ended

Richmond Barracks, Wednesday 6th September

alks at the Mess is a series of talks at Richmond Barracks, Inchicore that celebrate the rich stories and experiences of the local community, past and present.

Within this talk, Dr Cormac Moore will consider the question: was WT Cosgrave the architect of the hard border in Ireland. WT Cosgrave, as president of the Irish Free State Executive Council and as Minister of Finance, oversaw the introduction of customs barriers between Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State 100 years ago, in 1923, in essence creating a hard land border. This decision which helped to cement partition had major ramifications for the island of Ireland, particularly for those living close to the border. The talk looks at how much responsibility for creating a hard land border must be apportioned to Cosgrave and what other options were available to him at the time.

Dr Cormac Moore is the Historian in Residence for Dublin North Central. He has a PhD in History from De Montfort University in Leicester and a Masters in Modern Irish History from UCD. He is author of Birth of the Border: The Impact of Partition in Ireland, The Irish Soccer Split, and The GAA V Douglas Hyde: The Removal of Ireland’s First President as GAA Patron. He has a particular interest in the history of the land border in Ireland.
