Public Talk by Prof Lance Dixon: Journey to the Heart of Matter

A giant machine in Geneva, Switzerland smashes protons and other atomic nuclei to smithereens in a quest to explore what matter is made out of, to recreate the first moments of the Big Bang, and to discover the rules that govern our universe. Join us in a journey to a strange quantum realm at the heart of matter, where particles pop in and out of nothingness, and scatter freely off each other in a tiny universe of their own, before being bound together again for the rest of eternity. Find out what has been discovered so far, including the Higgs boson found in 2012, and what else we might still learn from this epic quest.
Speaker Biography: Lance Dixon received his bachelor's degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1982, and his PhD from Princeton University in 1986. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) for a year, an assistant professor at Princeton for a year, and a Panofsky Fellow at SLAC before becoming a professor at SLAC in 1992. He has had held visiting positions at Cambridge, Durham, CERN in Geneva, Ecole Normale Superieure, Caltech, Humboldt-Berlin, Freiburg and Zurich. Lance was awarded the Sakurai Prize of the American Physical Society in 2014 for pathbreaking contributions to the calculation of perturbative scattering amplitudes. In 2017 he received a Humboldt Research Award to conduct research in Germany.
