Live Online Talk: Queering the Chester Beatty

This event has ended

Online, Thursday 17th June

The stories that museum collections can tell are limited only by the questions we ask. It is time to ask new questions, make fresh connections, and see collections through a different lens. In this special talk during Dublin Pride, Prof. Richard Sandell (University of Leicester) and Kris Reid (Ulster University) will examine the importance of exploring LGBTQIA+ narratives within museums for all our audiences, while also introducing diversities of desire and identity from across the collections of the Chester Beatty.
This event has been organised to coincide with the Dublin Pride.

Speaker bios:

Kris Reid is a PhD Candidate at Ulster University, researching post-conflict museum activism within the context of queer heritage. He has worked for the National Trust and Historic Royal Palaces as part of their public engagement teams and has developed a monthly LGBTQ+ tour of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens. Above all, he is passionate about using stories from the past to challenge injustice today.

Richard Sandell is Professor in the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester and co-director of the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries. His research and practice explores the potential that museums and heritage might play in supporting human rights, social justice and equity. Richard has led a number of ground-breaking queer/LGBTQ initiatives in the museum and heritage sector.
