Addiction: A Christmas Literary Cabaret

This event has ended

Online, Sunday 20th December

Bethencourt Productions presents their last literary cabaret of the year 2020. Normally held at Buswells Hotel, the monthly cabarets moved online this year due to audience restrictions at arts events. The theme of the month is Addiction.

Billie Holiday had her ‘cabaret card’ license revoked for drug possession in 1947: Jazz & Lyricist Emilie Conway sings her pain. Actor Paul Nugent teaches an ingenue, played by Michael Mullen, the subtleties of stock market investment, in a scene from “The Wolf of Wall Street”(Scorsese). Author Mia Gallagher reads from her work. Pearse McGloughlin sings “Whiskey Tree”. Actors Anna Nugent & Monica Caballero attempt to get prescription drugs over the counter in two very different scenes from movies: “Magnolia”(Andersen) & “What have I done to deserve this?”(Almodovar) with actors Eoin O’Sullivan and Laura Casanellas; Cabaret Artist Rose Lawless, Darina Gallagher sings “Last Cigarette”. A nod to the music score from the movie “Leaving Las Vegas”, with violinist Evelyn McGrory and Josh Johnston on piano. With references to literary geniuses who battled with and thrived on their addictions. MC Leonor Bethencourt

Bloomsday celebrates Thursday 16 June 1904, the day depicted in James Joyce’s novel Ulysses. The day is named after Leopold Bloom, the central character in Ulysses. The novel follows the life and thoughts of Leopold Bloom and a host of other characters – real and fictional – from 8am on 16 June 1904 through to the early hours of the following morning. Celebrations often include dressing up like characters from the book and in clothes that would have been the style of the era.
