A History of Housing in Dublin

This event has ended

Richmond Barracks, Wednesday 6th April - Wednesday 4th May

Where did the Dublin tenements come from? Where were the first suburbs in Dublin?

This four-week course will explore the social and architectural history of housing in the city during the 19th and 20th centuries. Examining key figures in Dublin’s housing history such as Herbert George Simms (Housing Architect to Dublin Corporation from 1932 until 1948), and Daithí P. Hanly (former Dublin City Architect), we will discover how housing in the inner-city and suburbia has changed over the decades.

Led by Dublin Historian and lecturer Donal Fallon, this free in-person course will consist of talks and discussions. It will take place over four Wednesdays in Richmond Barracks.

• Week 1: Tenement Beginnings (Wednesday 6 April from 6:30pm to 8pm)
• Week 2: The First Suburbias: Townships and Victorian Dublin (Wednesday 20 April from 6:30pm to 8pm)
• Week 3: From Marino to Crumlin: Housing in the Free State (Wednesday 27 April from 6:30pm to 8pm)
• Week 4: Bally-far-out: Housing Since the 1950s (Wednesday 4 May from 6:30pm to 8pm)

Donal Fallon is a historian, broadcaster, author and curator from Dublin. Formerly Historian in Residence to Dublin City Council, he is the author of numerous studies of twentieth-century Dublin, including the recently published ‘14 Henrietta Street: From Tenements to Suburbia, 1922 – 1979 ’. He produces the Three Castles Burning podcast and has contributed to publications including Jacobin, Dublin Historical Review, Saothar and The Irish Times. Donal Fallon is Social Historian for Dublin City Council Culture Company.
