Counterpunch, a new exhibition made with women boxers from Dublin's north inner city, by artist Sharon Kelly, opens with a launch event on Thursday May 25th at 5pm and runs from Friday May 26th to Monday June 5th at the National Stadium Gym, Dublin 8. Made as part of a Creative Residency programme by Dublin City Council Culture Company with the Dublin City Sport & Wellbeing Partnership, Counterpunch is open daily from 10am – 5pm. Entry is FREE, to both the launch event and the exhibition, and all ages are welcome.
Artist Sharon Kelly has been working with sport through her art since 2013, with a keen focus on endurance and the parallels that sport and daily life hold in aspects of preparation, mental and physical resilience, determination, mindset, tradition and more. Together with three young elite boxers at Corinthians Boxing Club, Eve Woods, Nicole O’Sullivan and Yasmin Meredith and their coach Colin Byrne, Sharon looked at how women deal with the specific challenges of boxing, requiring both physical and mental resilience. The exhibition is a multimedia installation that includes sculptures, drawing and video.
