Gráinne Conroy: Lockdown Book Club – Get the most out of Zoom with a book club…

The Book: Exciting Times, Naoise Dolan

Gráinne says…
Description I robbed online – Ava, newly arrived in Hong Kong from Dublin, spends her days teaching English to rich children. Julian is a banker. A banker who likes to spend money on Ava, to have sex and discuss fluctuating currencies with her. But when she asks whether he loves her, he cannot say more than ‘I like you a great deal'. Enter Edith, a lawyer. Refreshingly enthusiastic and unapologetically earnest, Edith takes Ava to the theatre when Julian leaves Hong Kong for work. Quickly, she becomes something Ava looks forward to. And then Julian writes to tell Ava he is coming back to Hong Kong… Should Ava return to the easy compatibility of her life with Julian or take a leap into the unknown with Edith? Politically alert, heartbreakingly raw, and dryly funny, Exciting Times is thrillingly attuned to the great freedoms and greater uncertainties of modern love. In stylish, uncluttered prose, Naoise Dolan dissects the personal and financial transactions that make up a life-and announces herself as a singular new voice.

Organiser of Lockdown Book Club – Gráinne Conroy –
“Hi, I'm Gráinne, a yoga teacher based in Dublin, Ireland. My intention in teaching is to facilitate a deeper connection to the wisdom within. I've trained in both classical and contemporary approaches to yoga and teach with a slow, conscious style. I'm particularly drawn to sharing yoga for women and restorative yoga. Before yoga I studied and worked in many settings; I completed degrees in Business and Psychology and went on to work in business in the US, before spending five years working in arts education. At thirty I made a decision to travel to India and train as a Yoga Teacher. That decision opened a new way of living. I was exposed to perspectives and learning I wished to share onward. I would love to welcome you to my next series of events, Women on the Moon. This programme is specifically designed for the moment of uncertainty we now inhabit. I hope to see you online soon. xxx”
