Always Brighter Stories celebrates people doing kind, inclusive work in their communities across Dublin. From volunteer groups to disability activists, social enterprises, charities and more, we’re spotlighting these stories to thank all Dubliners who positively impact our city and county. This initiative is brought to you by Dublin City Council, with support from the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste.
James Casserly is a disability activist from Lucan in county Dublin. He runs ‘Jimbo’s Accessible Adventures’ on social media, advocating for better accessibility across Ireland, having travelled to all 32 counties to spread his message. James tests public transport, shops, cafés, and restaurants to see how accessible and accommodating they are for wheelchair users. To date, he has amassed over ten thousand followers.
James has cerebral palsy and juvenile arthritis and has been a wheelchair user from a young age, but he doesn’t allow his disability to interfere with him living his life to the fullest. In addition to his activism, he is an avid football fan and loves coaching and watching the sport. As a secondary school student, James completed work experience in Dublin Bus, as he is passionate about accessibility in public transport. He offered his unique perspective to the organisation and authored a report on his findings to suggest improvements for public transport in Dublin. James also consults with Irish Rail to test their accessibility improvements.
He is supported in his work by his mother, Vicki, who is a Fine Gael councillor and disability advocate. James hopes to expand his horizons by making his activism a full-time job. He wants to travel internationally to investigate accessibility across Europe and beyond, sharing his message as far and wide as possible.
