Always Brighter Stories celebrates people doing kind, inclusive work in their communities across Dublin. From volunteer groups to disability activists, social enterprises, charities and more, we’re spotlighting these stories to thank all Dubliners who make a positive impact in our city and county. This initiative is brought to you by Dublin City Council, with support from the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste.
Charlie Bird is a renowned journalist and broadcaster. In 2021, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, and ever since has been campaigning to raise awareness for the condition, and funds for the charities who support sufferers and their families. Charlie continues to extend the hand of friendship to as many people as possible across the country as he lives with his terminal illness.
In 2022, he led a hugely successful charity fundraising climb of Croagh Patrick with supporters and friends. Over €3.6 million was raised for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and the mental health charity Pieta. Climb with Charlie was honoured at the Global Alliance’s World Public Relations and Communication Awards as a result. Charlie has also produced a book about the experience.
Charlie also organised a Walk of Friendship event in 2023 in aid of Samaritans and continues to support charities across the country with his advocacy and fundraising efforts, particularly in the area of mental health. He is supported by his family – most notably his beloved dog Tiger, a 7-year-old cockapoo who is his constant companion, and his loving wife Claire.
Charlie is encouraging his fellow Dubliners to become involved in their local communities, with sports clubs, charities or other volunteer groups, and to spread positivity and kindness in any way they can. Extend the hand of friendship to someone today! You’ll find updates from Charlie on X/Twitter @charliebird49.
