Since the 1950s, Ireland has pursued a vision of ‘industrialisation by invitation’. Today, it benefits hugely from the welcoming business environment it has created. Over the years, many FDI companies from the US, Europe, and further afield have all invested in Ireland.

Why FDI companies come to Ireland

Ireland’s strong legal and regulatory landscape contributes to Dublin’s reputation as an attractive and stable place to do business.

EU and Eurozone membership, a young, well-educated, English-speaking workforce, and a competitive corporate tax rate all help too. The business-friendly environment here has enticed thousands of international companies to set up shop in Dublin.

According to IDA Ireland, 33% of its client multinational companies have had operations in Ireland for over 20 years, a powerful sign of the long-term commitments multinational corporations have made in Dublin and the wider country.

Today, more than 1,800 global firms have established operations across Ireland, and notably, half of them have maintained a presence here for over a decade.

As a result, huge inflows of foreign direct investment have come here on a sustained basis – particularly from the US. Ireland’s goods exports to the US totalled €73bn in 2024. A prominent success in the same year was the country’s exports of Medical and Pharmaceutical Products, which surged 29% to €99.9 billion overall. This accounted for nearly 45% of Ireland’s total goods exports, with a large portion going to the US. In fact, Ireland accounts for about one-fifth of all US pharmaceutical imports.

Of IDA Ireland’s 1,800+ client companies, around 60% are from the US, 30% from Europe, and 10% from Asia. These numbers show just how globally attractive Ireland remains as a leading hub for trade, investment, and innovation.

Today, foreign direct investment in Dublin is booming. From financial services and banking to big tech and pharma, many of the biggest names in business are already here.
