Pygmalion 26

Axis Ballymun, Monday 9th November - Thursday 12th November

“What if My Fair Lady was set in Belfast… and the language at the centre of the story was Irish?

Pygmalion 26 brings George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy into Belfast 2026, in a new Irish-language translation that puts a distinctly contemporary spin on one of theatre's most famous stories about class, language and identity. Just as Eliza Doolittle's accent determines how the world sees her inPygmalion (and its much-loved musical adaptationMy Fair Lady), Pygmalion 26 asks: who gets to claim Irish as their own?

Set against the vibrant Irish-language culture of West Belfast, the show explores accent, class, belonging and identity. From Kneecap to a new generation of Irish-language artists, Belfast's urban Gaeltacht is producing work that is boundary-pushing and culturally distinctive. Pygmalion 26 brings that energy to the stage in this new Irish-language translation.

Bringing together artists working across installation, performance, sound, games and digital media, the programme asks what happens when we de-centre the human perspective and begin to consider the intelligence of landscapes, plants, animals and machines. Through immersive experiences and participatory artworks, audiences are invited to encounter technologies as systems that shape our relationships with each other and with the environments we inhabit.
