Designing the News: The Changing World of Editorial Design

TU Dublin, East Quad, Grangegorman, Friday 13th November

Designing the News: The Changing World of Editorial Design brings together current practitioners and researchers to examine key issues affecting the dissemination and reception of factual information today and, crucially, in the future.

In the current climate of disinformation and stark polarisation, the apparently transparent but deeply rhetorical field of creative direction for news and media is an often over-looked tool in the challenge for media literacy. Bringing together experts from related fields and providing a forum to interrogate the developing role of creative direction for news and media, both at home and internationally, event addresses the often overlooked visual dimension of media literacy, news and current affairs.

We bring together a number of key practitioners to stimulate debate on this area. These include a number of internationally acclaimed, and arguably most prominent figures in European newspaper and magazine design of the last 30 years: Mark Porter (Irish Independent, Guardian) and Francesco Franchi (Domus, La Repubblica), with a number of local practitioners to be announced.

Those with an interest in editorial design, media literacy and the future of graphic design in Ireland and Europe are warmly welcomed. Recommended for those 18+.

Designing the News: The Changing World of Editorial Design has been made possible with support from Irish Design Week, TU Dublin’s Inspire programme and TU Dublin School of Media
