Hugh Lane Gallery, Friday 3rd February

Leave the Door Open is an evening of new performances and music for St. Brigid’s Day at Hugh Lane Gallery. Taking the wild plays of the Biddy Boys for inspiration, the evening will be hosted by artist Isadora Epstein with musicians/artists Aisling-ór níAodha, Stéphane Béna Hanly, Róisín ní Haicéid, and Meabh McKenna.

Traditionally on St. Brigid’s Eve, the front door would be left unlocked to welcome in St. Brigid and on 3 February the Hugh Lane Gallery will be open late to welcome in audiences. St. Brigid’s Eve was a time when the Biddy Boys, local mummers, would go from house to house in masks and put on plays and dance with brooms. As Brigid’s Day marks the change of seasons and beginning of Spring in the Celtic calendar, the event will joyfully welcome spring by imaginatively moving audiences through paintings, the seasons and folkloric worlds.
