Through a casual interview, this event will explore the experiences and life of Dr Gabriela McEvoy, a Peruvian academic with Irish ancestry.
Dr McEvoy earned her doctorate in Latin American Literature from the University of California in San Diego, United States. She is currently the chair of the Languages Department at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania, where she is also a professor of Spanish language, literature, and culture. Her area of specialization is the study of the European immigration to Latin America from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 20th. Intrigued by her own Irish heritage, Dr. McEvoy has focused her research on the Irish diaspora in Peru. She is a member of the Executive Board for the Society for Irish Latin American Studies (SILAS), an academic institution specializing in the study of the relationship between Ireland and Latin America.
She has published two books: her first book, La experiencia invisible. Inmigrantes irlandeses en el Perú (2018) was published by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos Fondo Editorial (Peru) and her second book, a collection of fictional stories, Palimpsesto. Relatos cortos de irlandeses en el Peru (2020) was published by Editorial Pliegos (Spain). She is currently researching the life and work of Mercedes Gallagher de Parks, granddaughter to John Patrick Gallagher O’Connor (1801-1871), who is considered to be the main promoter of the Irish migration project of 1851 to Peru. Dr. McEvoy’s new project analyzes Gallagher de Parks’ contribution to the changing role of women in Peru in the beginning of the 20th century.
